Zachary Land grew up in Michigan with a father who played the trombone and older brother who was a trumpet player. Raised in a home full of brass instruments and jazz, he began playing the trombone at age five. As his interest in music developed Land also began studying guitar, at age eleven, and bass guitar at thirteen. A few years later he attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music on scholarship, were he studied orchestral trombone with James De'Sano (principle trombonist with the
Cleveland symphony 1989-2003) and improvisation with legendary jazz trombonist Robin Eubanks (Dave Holland Quintet, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers). Since moving to Detroit he has applied his skills to gospel and R&B performance, appearing with Charles Laster III and 313 LIVE Experience, 2016 Detroit Best in Black "Best Live Band", and collaborating with producer Malik Alston. For Land, these influences have molded a style of trombone that is versatile, bold, and authentic in any context.
